Hi there, I'm running esxi on my home server and I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that there are more discrete PCIe devices (low-power GPUs, USB-cards, SATA-controllers) that I'd like to pass through to individual VMs than my mainboard can provide PCIe slots for. How would esxi handle PCIe bifurcation or riser systems like this? Could I pass through all PCIe devices connected to these kinds of systems to individual VMs or could I only pass through the "original" slot on the motherboard? To clarify, I'm not worried about bandwidth here since I'm neither using high-power GPUs nor 10Gbit ethernet adapters nor NVMe-storage, so I'd be fine with having 16 PCIe x1 slots instead of one PCIe x16 slot. Hello! I'm trying to get a (remarkably unorthodox) multi-GPU setup working with my system. In short, I'm trying to pair an Nvidia GTX 1050ti and a Quadra FX580 on the same Windows 10 system. My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-A320M-S2H. The 1050ti is installed in the PCiE x16 slot, and the Quadro FX580 is installed in one of the PCiE 1x slots via a 1x -> 16x riser card(typically used by bitcoin miners). Windows 10 recognizes both devices in the device manager. Yes, I understand the bottlenecks, warnings, and otherwise ridiculous nature of this setup, but I just needs it for additional monitor outputs. Buying a completely new 10-series GPU or new motherboard is out of the budget(already had the Quadro FX580 on hand), and USB-based video cards are too unreliable and underperforming for what we're after. This is what we've tried so far and the results we've gotten:
With no modifications (1050ti in x16, FX580 on riser), the system defaults to the 1050ti and shows no output on the FX580.
With the 1050ti in the riser and the FX580 in the x16 slot, the FX580 shows no output and the 1050ti works without a hitch.
With ONLY the FX580 in the riser OR the x16 slot, the system works without a hitch again; the FX580 works fine.
Booting into an Ubuntu installer shows BOTH GPUs working simultaneously regardless of their slot. This highlights that it isn't a hardware problem, but likely a driver one with Windows.
Here's where things get interesting. Booting into Linux, both GPUs work with no issues, right off the bat. Booting into Windows 10 safe mode and running DDU (followed by a reboot back into safe mode) enables both GPUs, and they both work. Which suggests that Windows 10 is definitely capable of operating in this configuration. However, attempting to install either driver for either card (or even just letting Windows do so on its own) breaks the FX580 and enables only the 1050 ti, giving a "Code 43" for the FX580 in device manager. I'm completely perplexed. Drivers for the FX580 aren't important, as it's just for additional screen real estate, though being able to run the latest drivers for the 1050ti would be nice for best game performance. Is there a way to "lock" the working Microsoft Basics Display Driver to the FX580, keeping it in a working state and allowing the 1050ti to be updated? My friend did this successfully with his personal system with a 1080ti and an old ATI card and it was plug-and-play; both cards worked great and there were no driver issues, so I'm completely stumped as to why this configuration is giving me so much trouble(He is stumped on this problem as well) Any insight or help would be greatly appreciated!
My gaming rig has a rtx 2080, a 4c/8t i7 and 16gb of ram, I want to make a ~15 second video however I need to be able to use my computer for school. I also have a decommissioned bitcoin mining rig with 6 gtx 1070ti's, however it only has 4gb of ram and a crappy Pentium cpu. My only other option is I could put two of the 1070ti's into my computer with some of my extra PCIE risers. Which of these would be my best option? Would DeepFakeLab even run with 4gb of ram? Any help or advice is greatly appreciated!
Planning a new fan-cooled 3D rendering workstation. I liked Entagma's build, but its already outdated with the new AMDs coming out in November with 128 PCIe lanes (PCIE 4.0). So ideally, the build can have the option to expand beyond 4 gpus using riser cards to split x16 pci slots into 2 pci x8... potentially 6-10 gpu's. Most cases can only handle 4 double-wide GPUs (rtx 2070). Are the bitcoin mining cases ok for 3D Rendering and fan cooling? I've seen a brand called Hydra III that looks promising. First time poster, long term lurkehoarder. I am currently running an unRAID server in a typical Rosewill server chassis, supplemented by second chassis that essentially just holds additional HDD’s that are connected over an HP SAS expander card coming off an LSI 8e external SAS card in the main server chassis very similar to the builds put together on the great site www.serverbuilds.net . I’m having a problem with not being able to power the HP SAS expander card reliably using any of the several of the PCIe power risers that others are using (type Bitcoin miners used to use). I have had to resort to installing and powering an additional spare motherboard/CPU in the disk chassis that I don’t need just to ensure that my HP SAS card is reliably powered. I was searching for solutions, and randomly came across this oddity of what appears to be a SAS expander implemented in a 5.25” external bay form factor: https://www.pc-pitstop.com/arc-8028-24 This is much more expensive than I would want to spend (probably $40-60 range would be budget) and appears to have many higher end datacenter features that I don’t require, but appears to be a potential solution to my problem. A story from a cloaky camper and an attempt to build a beast mode multi-boxing server.

Some of you may know me, some may not. Those that do will know I offer cloaky camping services over new eden. I do camping contracts / extort renters and focus my time hunting botters when the contracts are quiet. I offer PvP entities access to my cyno network to get dank kills and big escalations. From super carriers to Rattlesnakes.
The thing that got me into camping was hunting bots back in the dronelands a few years ago. I realised the most effective way to hurt them was to camp them 23/7, follow them around using locator agents. Eventually they had to rat with me in system. When they did I setup bubble traps etc and dropped blops and cleaned them up.
The 2nd thing I love about cloaky camping is the ability to counter Alliances (i feel its overpowered) intel channels / networks. Think about it. They have multiple intel toons dotted around the entrances to their pipes reporting hunters coming into the pipe allowing the PvE players to warp off and safe up. They even use external programs to collect this intel and give audible alerts. Cloaky camping is just the polar opposite. Dotting toons in their ratting pocket and giving me intel on whats going on in their system. As long as local chat exists so will cloaky camping. I'm pretty confident CCP share the same thought.
People probably think cloaky camping is easy. You are wrong. The prep work and behind the scenes work that goes into it is pretty immense. You are about to find out.
The hardware i'm currently running the 60 clients on is as follows:
How do you pay for 60 toons I started with 10 campers and made ISK by other means. When I made new campers I invested ISK and started to Skill extract and plexing the toons. I also make a decent amount from people who pay me to camp others.
The Setup I manage the clients window positions and CPU allocation with ISBOXER. Its legal to use as long as you don't use input broadcasting. I boot up the clients with ISBOXER EVE Launcher. I copy the window positions / chat channels etc over using garpaui. I use remote desktop to manage the clients light cynos etc. Example here
On both motherboards I had to under clock the processors as they were drawing too much power from the motherboard and causing the chipset to overheat. I think these motherboards are not beefy enough to support these 8 core processors. It caused the CPU to throttle reducing the clock speeds to 1.3Ghz and causing lag issues. I solved this problem by reducing the clock speed from 4Ghz to 3.6Ghz and reducing the CPU voltage. This reduced the heat by a really good amount and stopped the problems.
However, Me being me I wanted to expand and the camping pcs were running at full chat. So I needed a better piece of hardware to host these 60+ clients. So, while at Fanfest, I bidded on this R820 Server on ebay and won!

The hardware should be able to support multiple clients. However i'm not too sure how eve is going to behave when I try and open 60 instances all in one OS. I have set myself up for a hell of a challenge! However, I feel like I got a pretty good deal on the server and DELL hold their value. I'm sure I can re sell it if the project fails.

Install a Consumer GPU into the server somehow / buy an overpriced Quaddro / GRID gpu / modify a Geforce to appear like a Quaddro (some use the same hardware)
How to host the clients? Hypervisor or native all on one OS

Update 23/04/18 I have made some decent progress on this crazy project. I will give some breif updates here. I will get a blog up and running to post full details with how to's etc. Its probably way to long for reddit.
I have successfully installed some GPU's into the R810 AMD R9 280x and Nvidia GTX 970. I soldered some PCI-E cables to the PDB and it worked fine. The GTX sits nicely in the chassis however, the R9 280X is external atm using a PCIE x1 to x16 riser (from my bitcoin mining). Also I have managed to enable and use them both with passthrough in ESXI 6.5. Yes the GPU works with a x1 adaptor. WTF!
Freezing Problem with a single os install If I try and run more than 40 clients in a single OS I the system freezes when loading up client 41. I have tried the following:
Windows 10 / Windows server 2016 OS's
Virtual windows 10 OS
Using multiple instances of the Shared Cache
Installing EvE to a RAM drive
Removing / enlarging page file
I cannot see why it is freezing. Is there any way to gather logs for the client? It doesn't appear to be a resource problem. Plenty of RAM / CPU and HDD isn't going crazy.

Weird issue with HP 24-Port SAS Expander and HP LSI SAS9200-8e
Hi guys, I'm running a HP LSI SAS9200-8e SAS Controller (FW REV 20.00.06.00) in IT mode without a BIOS in my Server. The controller is connected to two 24-port HP 487738-001 / 468406-B21 SAS-Expanders (FW REV 2.10) with a SFF-8087 to SFF-8088 cable each. I upgraded the firmware from 2.08 to 2.10 using the procedure illustrated in this ServerFault post https://serverfault.com/a/631575 which worked fine (lsscsi and sas2ircu indicate firmware version 2.10 on the expanders) The Expanders get their power from PCIe-Risers (those used by bitcoin miners), which works just fine. Each of the expanders has two SFF-8087 to SATA breakout cables, each connected to a Chieftec CMR-3141SAS 4-bay disk enclosure. Each enclosure contains three WDC WD60EFRX-68L 6TB WD-RED drives. The drives are running in an MDADM RAID5 The drives an the expanders get their power from a separate 350W PSU. Now for the issue. When I turn on the expanders and drives, smartctl tells me the drives are only running 1.5 Gb/s. a speed test with hdparm confirms this. Turning on the expanders first and then plugging in the drives makes no difference. running
Need some troubleshooting help! Riser 008s and R3c
This project isn't for gpu mining but I know these risers are mainly used for this purpose so I thought I might get some good feedback here. My project is that I have an itx board with a single x16 pcie slot. It also has 3 m.2 pcie gen3 x4 slots. I have one free m.2 slot and wanted to convert that to x16 via riser. I wanted a 2nd low power silent gpu added to the rig. I went with the fanless msi 1030. It has a max draw of ~30w so I figured sata power would be safe. I purchased this and this to test with. Neither work!! So it must be something on my end?? The first part is fairly standard, the difference being I'm going to a m.2 slot where most of you are coming from x1 or x4. "In theory" this should just work! I'll start with the 2nd part since it's very simple: m.2 connector -> x16 socket + sata power. I hooked this up, seated the gpu and booted up. Nothing. Not even bios. I pulled the gpu and booted. Bios worked and booted up (running a 1080ti direct on the board). Installed the gpu back and nothing. I bought the 1030 used so I pulled the 1080ti and installed the 1030 direct to the mb. Works! So then I thought maybe the riser is bad or that sata power is insufficient seeing that most gpus would also have 6+8pin direct whereas mine has no external power. So I swapped risers out. This time the 008s with additional power connectors. Exact same thing. First I powered via pci only. Then sata+pci. And finally sata+pci+molex. In all situations the red led lit up. In all situations if I do not have the gpu plugged in it boots up fine. The strange thing is I never get into bios. No speaker or post lcd on this board so my troubleshooting is limited. And to note I test both gpu hdmi ports just to make sure one vs the other was set to primary. I got lazy and just looked at my mouse to light up to see if it booted. The mouse stayed dark, implying it never posted. Any help would be greatly appreciated! solved I have two m.2. ports which are pcie only. I have 1 port that is pcie/sata. the suggestion by u/sqrtlurface was to use the pcie/sata port and now the 1030 is being recognized in both linux and windows.
Anyone have any experience with m.2 to x16 risers?
So first off, I'm a little disappointed that there aren't any april fools jokes here.....I have just come from homelab and well the top 15 posts are pictures of labs (the dog). perhaps a little excessive. lol. I'm getting into virtualization (I'm testing clear linux + kvm) and have bought parts to add a second gpu to my itx build. itx builds for the most part only come with a single x16 slot. That is occupied by a 1080ti. This will be for passthru use. So from my learning it would be beneficial for me to have a 2nd gpu. The only expansion I have now is m.2. They are pcie gen 3 x4 based slots. Technically I should be able to convert to a x16 sized slot but run at x4 speed. For my use (2d only) this should be fine. Talking about this is making me research my card being compatible with x4. I believe all x16 cards are backwards compatible by design, but double checking. I am testing this and this so far without success. This application is primarily used in the crypto mining world so I asked for troubleshooting help there but was curious if any attempts here were made. p.s. my build is skylake-x which disappointingly doesn't come with igp and that would have solved my 2nd gpu issue. any itx owners with no igpu or need a 2nd/3rd gpu can try buying the above parts, but make sure you have a sata/pcie m.2 slot. for my system m.2 pcie only did NOT work properly.
